The Manaslu Circuit Trek, offered by Adventure Family Treks and Expedition, is one of Nepal's most spectacular and remote trekking routes. Encompassing a 16-day journey, this trek takes you deep into the heart of the Manaslu Conservation Area, encircling the world's eighth highest peak—Mt. Manaslu (8,163 meters / 26,781 feet). Known for its raw natural beauty, cultural richness, and fewer crowds compared to other popular trails, the Manaslu Circuit offers an authentic Himalayan adventure.
Starting from the subtropical forests of Machha Khola, the trek ascends through terraced hillsides, rhododendron forests, ancient Buddhist villages, and high alpine landscapes before culminating at the majestic Larkya La Pass (5,106 meters / 16,752 feet). Along the route, trekkers encounter Tibetan-influenced culture, gompas (monasteries), mani walls, and charming stone-built villages like Sama Gaon and Samdo. Managed with professionalism and care by Adventure Family Treks and Expedition, the trek blends nature, culture, and adventure in a way few others can.
Timing your trek is essential for safety and enjoyment. Adventure Family Treks and Expedition recommends two optimal seasons for the Manaslu Circuit Trek:
a. Spring (March to May):
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit the Manaslu region. The weather is generally stable, skies are clear, and the trails are adorned with blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers. Temperatures at lower altitudes are comfortable, while the high passes remain accessible.
b. Autumn (September to November):
Autumn is the most popular season due to its crisp mountain views, mild daytime temperatures, and clear skies. Post-monsoon freshness enhances the visibility of the snow-capped peaks, and the trail conditions are excellent for high-altitude trekking.
Avoid the monsoon season (June to August) due to heavy rain, landslides, and leeches. Winter (December to February) brings harsh cold and heavy snow at higher altitudes, making the Larkya La Pass difficult to cross.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a moderate to challenging trek suitable for trekkers with good physical fitness and prior multi-day trekking experience. With long trekking days, steep ascents and descents, and high-altitude exposure, it requires both mental and physical preparedness. The highest point, Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), can be particularly strenuous due to altitude and weather conditions.
Trekking Challenges:
Adventure Family Treks and Expedition ensures your safety with acclimatization days (such as at Sama Gaon) and experienced guides.
Transportation:
These bumpy but scenic drives pass through hills, rivers, and picturesque landscapes, giving trekkers a taste of rural Nepal.
Food and accommodation along the Manaslu Circuit have greatly improved in recent years, but trekkers should still expect basic mountain teahouse facilities. Adventure Family Treks and Expedition partners with reliable teahouses to ensure hygienic meals and comfortable stays throughout the journey.
Food:
Meals are cooked fresh, often using local produce. Dal Bhat is the most energy-rich and commonly recommended dish for trekkers.
Accommodation:
Higher elevations (above 3,000 m) have more rustic lodges, but the hospitality of the locals more than compensates for the simplicity.
Due to its location near the Tibetan border, the Manaslu region is a restricted area, and special permits are required. Adventure Family Treks and Expedition handles all permit arrangements for you.
Required Permits:
Important Notes:
All permits are checked at various checkpoints along the trail, so it's important to have them properly organized before departure.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek offers a truly off-the-beaten-path experience for trekkers seeking solitude, cultural depth, and raw Himalayan beauty. Unlike the more commercialized Everest or Annapurna regions, the Manaslu trail remains relatively untouched, with far fewer trekkers, enhancing the feeling of wilderness and adventure.

Their dedicated team not only guides but educates, entertains, and takes care of you every step of the way. Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Adventure Family Treks and Expedition will warmly welcome you with a traditional Nepali greeting. You’ll be transferred to your hotel in the heart of the city where you can rest after your international flight. Depending on your arrival time, you can explore nearby areas such as Thamel, known for its vibrant atmosphere, restaurants, and shops. In the evening, the company will provide a short briefing on the trekking itinerary and ensure you're comfortably settled in before the adventure begins.
Today is a cultural immersion into the rich history of the Kathmandu Valley. After breakfast, you’ll embark on a guided sightseeing tour visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, and the ancient Boudhanath Stupa. These landmarks provide insight into Nepal’s spiritual and architectural heritage. After the tour, there will be a comprehensive pre-trek meeting with your guide from Adventure Family Treks and Expedition, where final equipment checks and permit arrangements are made. This day also allows time for last-minute shopping and rest before heading into the Himalayas.
The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, taking approximately 8–10 hours depending on road conditions. As you leave the bustling city, the route winds through lush hills, river valleys, and rural villages, offering glimpses of Nepal’s diverse landscapes. The final leg of the drive is on a rugged road, bringing you closer to the remote region of the Manaslu Conservation Area. Upon reaching Machha Khola, a small riverside village, you’ll settle into a local teahouse for the night. This marks the start of your real trekking adventure into the wilderness.
Your trek begins with a gradual walk along the Budi Gandaki River, crossing several suspension bridges and navigating through terraced fields, waterfalls, and thick subtropical forests. The trail ascends and descends as you pass the village of Dovan, where you’ll take a short break. From here, the path becomes steeper and rockier as it climbs toward Jagat, a charming stone-paved village with traditional Tibetan influence. As you check in to a teahouse, you’ll notice the shift in culture and landscape. Jagat is also the entry checkpoint for the restricted Manaslu region.
Leaving Jagat, the trail ascends through a beautiful landscape dotted with rhododendron and pine forests. You pass through Salleri and reach Philim, a large Gurung village known for its artistic houses and peaceful atmosphere. After a brief rest here, the trail traverses narrow gorges and cross multiple bridges over the Budi Gandaki River. You’ll experience both physical challenge and natural beauty, with occasional sightings of langurs and Himalayan birds. After a long and rewarding day, you’ll arrive at Deng, a small village nestled in the mountains, where you’ll spend the night.
The trail from Deng climbs steadily through alpine forests and scenic ridges, offering glimpses of snow-capped peaks in the distance. You'll pass through several traditional settlements, including Rana and Bihi Phedi, where the Tibetan cultural influence becomes more visible. Mani walls, prayer flags, and chortens line the trail as you gain elevation. Crossing the river a few times, you’ll finally reach Namrung, a beautiful village known for its strong Tibetan heritage and panoramic views of mountains like Ganesh Himal and Himal Chuli. Overnight stay is in a cozy teahouse with warm hospitality.
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the heart of the Nubri Valley. Departing from Namrung, the trail passes lush forests and small settlements such as Lihi and Sho. You’ll encounter ancient mani walls, prayer wheels, and intricately carved stone houses. As you ascend gradually, the peaks of Manaslu (8,163 m), Naike Peak, and Himal Chuli become visible, providing a stunning backdrop. Upon reaching Lo-Gaon, a culturally rich village, you can explore the ancient monastery and enjoy majestic views. This serene village, surrounded by barley fields, offers a peaceful setting to rest and acclimate.
The trail today is relatively short, allowing for a slower pace as the altitude increases. As you leave Lo-Gaon, the landscape opens up with sweeping views of the Manaslu range. You’ll walk through pine forests and yak pastures before arriving at Sama-Gaon, one of the largest and most important villages in the region. Rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture, Sama-Gaon is home to a beautiful monastery and surrounded by stupas and mani walls. It also offers exceptional views of Mt. Manaslu looming overhead. This will be your base for acclimatization and local exploration.
To ensure proper acclimatization, today is a rest and exploration day. You can take a side trip to Pungyen Gompa or hike up to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m), depending on your fitness and interest. These excursions offer panoramic mountain views and a closer connection to the Himalayan environment. Exploring Sama-Gaon itself is rewarding, with its centuries-old monastery, traditional Tibetan homes, and local people engaged in daily life. The rest day is crucial for your body to adjust to the altitude before you move toward higher elevations. Overnight at the same teahouse.
Leaving Sama-Gaon, the trail ascends gradually along the valley, offering magnificent views of snow-covered peaks and glacial moraines. You’ll cross streams and pass yak herders' settlements as you enter a more remote and wind-swept landscape. After a few hours of trekking, you’ll reach Samdo, a small Tibetan refugee village close to the Tibetan border. It is known for its dramatic mountain scenery and unique high-altitude lifestyle. This village, set against the backdrop of soaring Himalayan giants, offers a glimpse into ancient trade culture. Overnight in a simple yet comfortable teahouse.
Today is a shorter but more challenging trek due to increasing altitude. The trail ascends steadily from Samdo through barren landscapes and rugged terrain. You’ll cross wooden bridges and encounter occasional blue sheep or Himalayan birds. As you approach Dharmasala, also known as Larkya Phedi, the terrain becomes more glaciated and exposed. This small settlement is the last overnight stop before crossing the high Larkya La Pass. Rest and hydrate well today, as tomorrow is the longest and most demanding day of the trek. The evening is spent preparing for the early morning start.
This is the most anticipated and strenuous day of the trek. Starting before dawn, you’ll climb steadily across rocky terrain and snow-covered ridges toward the Larkya La Pass. Reaching the top (5,106 m) is both physically and emotionally rewarding, with jaw-dropping views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II. After spending time at the pass, the trail descends steeply to Bhimtang, passing glacial moraines and eventually entering alpine meadows. This descent is long but scenic. Upon reaching Bhimtang, you'll celebrate completing the highest point of the trek with well-earned rest.
After the high mountain pass, today’s descent feels refreshing. The trail gradually drops through rhododendron forests, open pastures, and small settlements. With each step, the environment shifts from alpine to temperate. The path follows the Dudh Khola River and offers occasional views of the snow peaks behind you. You’ll reach Gowa, a lesser-known village with fewer trekkers, providing a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. It’s a great place to rest and reflect on the high Himalayan portion of your trek. You’ll enjoy a comfortable night in a local lodge with warm hospitality.
The final day of trekking brings you down to Dharapani, one of the main gateways to the Annapurna Circuit. The path continues through lush forests and quaint villages, and the warmer climate becomes noticeable. Once in Dharapani, you’ll say goodbye to the Manaslu trail. From here, a scenic drive will take you to Besisahar, a bustling town in the low hills of western Nepal. This marks the end of the trekking journey. You'll stay overnight in a comfortable guesthouse or hotel and enjoy a well-deserved rest and a celebratory meal.
After breakfast, you’ll embark on a 6–8 hour drive back to Kathmandu, retracing the journey through winding roads, terraced fields, and traditional villages. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for a relaxing stay. The remainder of the day is free—take a warm shower, shop for souvenirs, or explore the vibrant streets of Thamel. In the evening, Adventure Family Treks and Expedition will host a farewell dinner to celebrate your successful completion of the trek and share reflections with your guide and fellow trekkers.
Your unforgettable journey through the Manaslu region comes to an end. A representative from Adventure Family Treks and Expedition will transfer you to the airport in time for your departure flight. If you have more time in Nepal, the company can help organize additional tours or treks. Otherwise, with a heart full of memories and a camera full of photos, you’ll bid farewell to the Himalayas. The experiences of the Manaslu Circuit—the culture, nature, and adventure—will stay with you long after your return home.
